Entourage Backup

Microsoft Office includes Entourage as an alternative to Apple’s Mail client.  Entourage provides a bunch of great functionality, but the way it stores your data can possibly cause you a headache one day.  All of the data in Entourage is stored in a single database file and if this file becomes damaged, corrupted, or deleted you could find yourself lost.  Time Machine can save you if you accidentally delete the database but if the database file becomes damaged or corrupted it just may be backing up a bad file and data loss could still be possible.  What can you do to protect yourself?

Make an Entourage Archive

To make an Entourage archive go to the “File Menu” and select “Export” and select “Export items to an Entourage archive”. Leave the rest of the defaults checked and click the right arrow to complete.  Store the Entourage archive or .rge file on another drive or burn a DVD.  Do this as often as you think is necessary to avoid losing any work.

iPhone and Outlook Question Answered

Recently a client was referred to me by the Apple Store needing to know whether the notes section of a contact syncs up between the iPhone and a PC running Windows and Outlook.  I knew that the note field synced just fine with an Exchange Server using ActiveSync, but I had never tried manually with a USB connection between the iPhone and PC.  No reason it shouldn’t work, right?  I booted into XP on my MacBook via Boot Camp and installed the latest version of iTunes and the Office 2007 demo and began testing.  Sure enough it synced the notes field of a contact between both devices perfectly.  I’ve been really impressed with how Apple has included PC integration with the iPhone and I see no reason why a business person who would typically tote a BlackBerry should not consider an iPhone.
